Evaluating the impact of introducing social norms statements on rape myth acceptance among Division III male athletes
2019 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.Sexual violence on college campuses is a serious and pervasive issue facing higher education in the United States. Social norms interventions provide a promising framework for reducing sexual violence on college campuses. Some research has been conducted using social norms interventions with student athletes, but the findings are inconsistent between Division I and III levels. The purpose of this study was to a) examine the role and impact of social norms and rape myth acceptance (RMA) among male student athletes at Division III programs and b) better understand the influence of normative clarification on male student athlete behavior in small school settings. A survey was distributed to over 200 male, student athletes at a small, private, liberal arts institution and was comprised of three instruments: 1) the Student Athlete Social Norms Survey, 2) the Hypermasculinity Inventory and 3) the Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance Scale. Participants were placed into three different test conditions (no norms / control, high norms and low norms) to measure the influence of normative statements on their rape myth acceptance. No statistically significant differences were found between levels of rape myth acceptance across the intervention groups. The findings support earlier studies that found differences in the impact of normative campaigns between Division I and Division III student-athletes
An Operational Semantics of CommUnity Based on Graph Transformation Systems
AbstractWe propose an operational semantics, based on graph transformation, of CommUnity, a simple program design language. Each action of a single CommUnity design is modeled by a synchronized hyperedge replacement rule. Synchronized actions of several interconnected designs in a configuration result automatically from the individual rules thanks to the rule synchronization mechanism
More ties than we thought
We extend the existing enumeration of neck tie-knots to include tie-knots
with a textured front, tied with the narrow end of a tie. These tie-knots have
gained popularity in recent years, based on reconstructions of a costume detail
from The Matrix Reloaded, and are explicitly ruled out in the enumeration by
Fink and Mao (2000).
We show that the relaxed tie-knot description language that comprehensively
describes these extended tie-knot classes is context free. It has a regular
sub-language that covers all the knots that originally inspired the work.
From the full language, we enumerate 266 682 distinct tie-knots that seem
tie-able with a normal neck-tie. Out of these 266 682, we also enumerate 24 882
tie-knots that belong to the regular sub-language.Comment: Accepted at PeerJ Computer Science 12 pages, 6 color photograph
From boxes to worlds
In this paper we show an innovative way to represent graphic designs 01 systems and to verify design properties. The graphic designs are thought as models of an extended modal logic; and the methods used to verify properties are developed from techniques typical of classic modal logic, extended to cover the differences in the underlying formalism. We present the procedures orlogical tools to derive the modal model associated to a given design, the filtration of models and the construction 01 modal descriptions.
A higher level of abstraction is obtained in this way, and it lets us reason over designs in a strictly formal manner. The power of formal provability is also achieved.
We use a working example to show how our tools help to veri1y properties 01 design like the detection of cycles (self loops).Eje: Diseño de softwareRed de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI
Endoscopic transabdominal cervical cerclage replacement after recurrent late miscarriage
Transabdominal cerclage (TAC) is a recognised treatment for recurrent spontaneous late miscarriage or preterm birth due to cervical weakness. This can be performed via an open procedure before and during pregnancy, or a laparoscopic technique preconception. Complications include cerclage failure and suture migration. We present a case highlighting these complications where laparoscopic removal of an open TAC and replacement led to two successful term deliveries. A woman in her thirties with a fibroid uterus, adenomyosis and a history of three spontaneous mid-trimester losses, had an open TAC at 13 weeks of gestation. Preterm premature rupture of the membranes occurred shortly after and at 18 weeks of gestation she underwent surgical evacuation of the uterus. Subsequent hysteroscopy confirmed migration of the cerclage through the cervical canal. We demonstrate the application of endoscopic gynaecological surgery to remove and replace the TAC with two successful term births by Caesarean section in the ensuing pregnancies
Role of the initial conditions on the enhancement of the escape time in static and fluctuating potentials
We present a study of the noise driven escape of an overdamped Brownian
particle moving in a cubic potential profile with a metastable state. We
analyze the role of the initial conditions of the particle on the enhancement
of the average escape time as a function of the noise intensity for fixed and
fluctuating potentials. We observe the noise enhanced stability effect for all
the initial unstable states investigated. For a fixed potential we find a
peculiar initial condition which separates the set of the initial
unstable states in two regions: those which give rise to divergences from those
which show nonmonotonic behavior of the average escape time. For fluctuating
potential at this particular initial condition and for low noise intensity we
find large fluctuations of the average escape time.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. Appeared in Physica A (2003
